The Economy, Money and Genealogy

Come on, you’ve thought about it. You love doing genealogy. Why can’t someone pay you to do genealogy? Well, the good news is, someone can! I just took a phone call from a student I advised a couple of years ago about research, reports and genealogical credentials. She was interviewing professional genealogists about their take on careers in genealogy. So, see, you’re not the only one!

As I answered her questions about how to set fees, who typical clients are and the prospects for employment growth, I was reminded of our own success here at ProGenealogists. We’ve had ten years of sustainable growth, even in the current economy when money remains tight for many families. I am bullish on the future of professional genealogy. In fact, I’m swamped with work to do and working extra hours to meet those client commitments. That brings me to the point of this post.

ProGenealogists is hiring! As the largest genealogical research firm in America, ProGenealogists is a forward thinking group and an exciting place to work where new challenges are met every day. Full-time staff get traditional benefits as well as the opportunity to work with some of the most experienced minds in the field today. We currently have three openings posted on our website, so go check out the opportunities at Current Job Openings (especially the assistant genealogist, we need that person right away).

Of course, maybe you’re not “ready for prime time” or are still thinking about becoming a professional genealogist. We’ve got a couple of articles you ought to read. Check out “I Want to Work as a Professional Genealogist … Now What?” and then take a few minutes to review “The Reality Gap.” Follow the links in the first article for more information.

If you’re not ready to apply, that’s fine, but tell your friends. Send them the link and if they apply and are qualified, we’ll contact them. They’ll be grateful and you’ll be building your network!
