Festive Names Throughout History

With the holiday season in full-swing, I thought it would be fun to use various holiday words and phrases and see if I could find people in historical records that carried these words and phrases as actual names. Here are a few that I found:

1. Mary Christmas

There are many instances of this name appearing, but here is an 1881 census entry from Norfolk, England showing Robert Christmas and his wife, Mary:1881 Census of Norfolk, England

 2. Christmas Carroll

Here is a 1912 London marriage entry for a gentleman named Christmas Carroll!

3. Holly Berry

And here in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census we have a man named Holly Berry living in Ohio!

 4. Happy Holliday

Believe it or not, we have a woman named Happy Holliday appearing in the 1891 census of Norfolk, England!

census 3

 5. Egg Nog Anyone?

While I couldn’t find anyone with the fist name of Egg, I did find a Hungarian woman named Egri Nog listed in the 1910 census Fairfield County, Connecticut.

census 4

 6. Jack Frost

There were plenty of instances of this name, but one record, an 1886 Chippewa Indian tribal roll, shows a Frost family with the father being listed as Jack Frost.

I hope these historical tidbits add a little fun to your holidays!
